The following activities represent a small portion of the Club's community involvement and work:

  • Lions Christmas Cakes Sold by members in a wide range of areas throughout the Grovedale and Geelong communities. This is a major source of funds for the Club's activity account. Funds from Lions Christmas Cakes contribute to many significant Lions projects both locally, nationally and internationally.

  • Lions Mints Club members maintain many Lions Mints in local businesses. Significant funds are raised via Lions Mints sales throughout the year. The Lions Club of Grovedale Waurn Ponds acknowledges the generosity of these businesses in supporting this very positive activity.

  • National Australia Bank Lions Youth of the Year Quest The Club has participated in this activity on an annual basis over most of the years of its operation. The quest provides an opportunity for students to hone their skills in interviewing, public speaking and acting as a school ambassador with an eventual opportunity, if successful, of reaching the national final competition, which occurs at the Multiple District National Lions Convention. In 2010 the quest final round will be held in Mildura in May.

  • Adopt-A-Park As part of the club members' commitment to environmental pursuits periodic working bees occur at the local parks along the Waurn Ponds Creek .

  • Adopt-A-Highway A leisurely stroll along the Princes Highway in Waurn Ponds towards Colac is enjoyed by members and assists in maintaining a clean and rubbish free roadside over a two Km stretch of the road. This activity occurs about three times a year.

  • General Work Crewing The Club often assists in a range of activities both paid (these funds assisting in fund-raising efforts) and unpaid and voluntary work to support the local community. Some examples of regular work which occurs annually and/or bi-annually in assisting at the Royal Geelong Show; the Geelong Ford Day and the Air Show event held at Avalon Airport. Club members have also assisted at other community events such as fun runs and marathons.

  • Social Activities Club members and partners enjoy regular and interesting social events as well as the fun of working together on Lions Club projects.  Some of these social activities have been a Halloween Night; a Trivia Night to Celebrate Australia Day; dining out together; and attendance at the District Convention, particularly the Saturday night banquet.

  • Other The club has also been active in recent years in supporting the Youth Exchange Program; the Lions Children's Mobility Foundation; Lions Hearing Dogs; Victorian Lions Foundation; Australian Lions Foundation; Lions Clubs International Foundation; being proud to be admitted to the Diamond Visionary Society for activity in the Lions Clubs International Project Sight First 2 Campaign in 2008-2009.

Adopt a Highway Project

The Adopt-A-Highway program started in Australia back in 1972 when one of Victoria's 'Tidy Towners' visited the USA and saw the program working in a number of states.

Upon coming back home (to Horsham) he set about introducing the program in the town which soon spread throughout Victoria.

Currently there are 100 registered groups who have adopted roadways across Victoria and amongst them are the Lions from the Lions Club of Grovedale/Waurn Ponds.

At right, two club members, properly kitted out with high-visibility vests and gloves, doing environmental improvements along the roadside in November.   They were at the 10 km post on the road to Colac, just past Waurn Ponds. The picturesque background is of the hills around Waurn Ponds. The Club Adopt a Highway co-ordinator is Lion David Ridley.

Melbourne Cup Social Function

As is well known, Melbourne Cup Day is Australia's most famous Tuesday.   It's a day when the nation stops whatever it's doing to listen to the race call, or watch the race on TV, and even those who don't usually bet, try their luck.

The members of the Lions Club of Grovedale/Waurn Ponds celebrated like millions of other Australians - an  excellent social function was held on Melbourne Cup night with club members and their guests. Lots of story telling about backing losers (and winners), raffles and fellowship a'plenty.
